It’s a fact that most plants will yield much better results if time is taken up front to improve the soil in plant beds. One of the keys is organic matter - and plenty of it - incorporated into the top layer of soil. This improves drainage and lets air move more freely through the soil (enabling oxygen to reach the roots more easily).
